Assisted Suicide And The United States - 2826 Words

In today’s society it is taught that life is a precious gift and to cherish every second that is allowed, but what if it is full of endless pain and misery? Starting hundreds of years ago in Ancient Greece up until modern times with Doctor Kevorkian, physician-assisted suicide, and euthanasia are all highly debated topics that cause both legal and moral dilemmas, but provide patients with benefits such as financial and pain relief. Assisted suicide should be legalized in the United States to prevent pain and suffering for the patients and their families. Cultures around the world have been using assisted suicide to provide an easy and painless death for hundreds of years. â€Å"Euthanasia,† a term created by Suetonius, is two greek words â€Å"Eu†¦show more content†¦They were big buildings that were equipped with gas chambers, crematoriums, mortuaries, and rooms to dissect and remove all valuables that were missed in earlier collection. Historians speculate t his is what started the endemic of assisted suicide in modern times. Hitler started what was know as the â€Å"Euthanasia Program† in which the term was changed from â€Å"Good Death† to mass murder of the Jewish people, Gypsies and the handicapped people of Germany and ultimately started the Holocaust. Hitler wanted to kill off the people that he did not think were worthy of life. Doctor Jack Kevorkian was the subject of the most recent assisted suicide debates. Dr. Death, as he was later called, was a pathologist who was convicted of murder for helping his patients in the act of physician-assisted suicide. He was always interested in death and dying and wanted to help his patients go peacefully instead of suffering. He had, what he called, a suicide machine set up in an old van and would drive around, at people’s requests, to assist them in killing themselves. Kevorkian was tried multiple times for murder, but pleaded not guilty until 1999, when the court show ed a video of him providing Thomas Youk with lethal doses of drugs. Lab: Determining What Type Of Stimulus Info Is More Easily Remembered Essay AbstractA single subject study took place where a male, university student,willingly took part in helping determine what type of stimulus informationis more easily remembered. The two types of stimulus introduced weremeaningful (CVC) and randomized (CVC). The number of errors made among thetwo stimuli was also studied. This experiment was done using a computergenerated program on verbal learning. Using this program, the subject waspresented with seven items of stimuli (CVC) and was to remember what eachstimuli was in the correct order. It was found that there are more correctresponses when meaningful stimulus is used and the speed of responding tothe stimuli is faster when a meaningful CVC is used, rather than in randomfashion. IntroductionRemembering is the retrieval of information, which is stored inmemory. The act of remembering takes place when a correct response isgiven to a certain stimuli presented. Forgetting is a weakening of thisstimulus-response relationship. The Purpose of this experiment is to determine what type of stimulusinformation is more easily remembered, be it in randomized manner ormeaningful. When are more errors made in remembering the stimuli, amongthese two types of stimuli used (CVC). Also, when a correct response isgiven, which was the type of stimuli (CVC) that caused this to occur. The design of this experiment on verbal learning has bothwithin-subject and between-subject variables. The within-subject variablesare the words (CVC) that are stored in the computer which are the defaultwords to be used. The between-subject variables are the number of stimuliused and the choice of the stimuli using the experimenters own words (CVC). The independent variable for this lab is the number of stimuli presentedand the type of stimulus word (CVC) that was used, being both randomizedand meaningful. The dependent variables are the number of errors made andthe mean correct response latency (speed of responding). Number of errors will be highest in the randomized ordered stimuli,and the speed of responding will be slower in the randomized stimulicondition. Method A single subject, male, twenty years of age in first year ofUniversity volunteered to take part in this experiment on Verbal Behaviour. The apparatus used in this experiment was an IBM compatible computer,a monochrome monitor (non-colour), and a Raven dot matrix printer. Runningon the IBM compatible was a computer generated program on Verbal Learningfrom which this experiment originated. Procedure:The first step in this experiment requires that the experimenter getthe computer and program ready for the student. The computer, monitor andprinter were to be turned on . When the computer was ready and flashing acursor, Caps Lock was to be pressed, so all letters will be in capitalform. The name of the program to be run (VL) was to be typed into thekeyboard. When the program had loaded, a menu showed up on the screen, andVerbal Learning (selection 8) was to be run. A timing number was to bekeyed into the computer (3.578) and then the Serial Learning feature was tobe chosen (option 1). After the above steps, the rest of the experiment wasentirely up to the experimenter. After the timing number was entered, the experimenter could eitheraccept the default values for the parameters of the experiment alreadystored in the computer, or could change any of the parameters. Thisprocedure continued until the student had correctly completed three fulltrial periods of seven words. When the three correct trials were done, a screen showed up whichcontained the preliminary data analysis. Further data analysis were to beexamined so the options on the following screens to be selected were 1)analysis of error/error latencies For each stimulus, 2) number of errors orcorrect responses and 3) display data in digital form. This shows that there were in all, five errors made and thirtycorrect answers given (figure 1). The mean correct latency was 3.643011which was how fast the subject responded to the stimuli. For every trialthat occurred among the five trials, there was a mean of 1 error per trialand six correct answers. Looking at the analysis of errors for eachstimulus word, there were no errors in stimulus 1,2 or 3. In stimulus4,5,6 there was one error made in each of them. In the last stimulus,7,there was 2 errors made in trying to remember what the stimulus was. Thisshows that the primacy effect where recognition is highest for the firstitem and lowest for the last item is clearly demonstrated in part one. In the second part of the lab, in which very meaningful words wereused as stimuli for the student to remember, there were zero errors made intotal (figure 2). The total number of correct responses was twenty one,which meant that every response given by the subject was absolutelycorrect. The mean correct response latency was 1.740399. Among the words(CVC) that were used in this second part were very easy to understand, andmeaningful enough to remembered easily. This accounts for the zero errorsthat were made. These results clearly show that when presented with a randomized orderof stimuli and a meaningful set of words, the number of errors will behigher in the randomized condition. Also the speed of responding to thestimulus will be very quick in the meaningful form (1.740399) rather thanin the randomized order (3.643011). The measure of learning seems to vary with the independent variablessuch as the number of stimuli and type of CVC used, whether they aremeaningful or randomized. The last factor when dealing with this sort of experiment is thatperformance of memory in remembering the stimuli was better, since therecognition testing immediately followed repetitions of the words. Ifthere was a long delay or no delay, then memory performance will suffer.

Old Capulet doesnt show much in the way of affection to his daughter either, he views her as a commodity and is very angry when she doesnt want to marry Paris, doth she not give us thanks, doth she not count her blest, unworthy as she is he launches into a tirade and even calls her a whore mistress minion you. He is much more concerned about the family pride than about his daughters feelings. He even tells her he will drag her there himself, then he says Graze where you will, you shall not house with me. Look tot think ont, I do not use to jest. He is telling her in no uncertain terms that if she doesnt obey him she is going to be thrown out of the household. He is also aware of the dangers of early teenage pregnancies, and even though he proclaims his love for his child to Paris She is the hopeful lady of my earth. And points out that she is much to young for marriage he soon changes his mind as he considers it to be a good match, but what he means is that Paris would be a good catc h and it would help to further the familys fortunes Even after Juliets refusal to wed Paris he still goes ahead with arranging the wedding. Lady Capulet wants to gain from the match as well when she is telling Juliet about him she describes him as the valiant Paris and says Veronas summer hath not such a flower. Would she have been as eager for the match if Paris wasnt a count? She tells Juliet so shall you share all that he doth possess, by having him, making your self no less The Nurse views love as a physical earthy thing that should be fun, she likes to regale people with tales of her sex life as she has very much enjoyed it, now by my maidenhead at twelve year old. She is a fun person and loves to gossip, the language she uses can be much sexualised like Mercutios A bump as big as a cockerels stone. She has been Juliets nurse since the death of her own daughter who was around the same age as Juliet, so she is very close to her. She looks upon Juliet as almost her own, and is definitely closer to her than her own mother is. Nurse likes to let people know how maternal she feels towards Juliet she brings up the fact she breast fed her when she talks to Romeo I nursed her daughter that you talked withal She wants Juliet to be happy as she adores her so much, she tells Juliet go, girl, seek happy nights to happy days. She helps Juliet with her trysts with Romeo even though she thinks Paris is better perfect, A man young lady! Lady such a man as in all the worl d-why, hes a man of wax. She also tells Juliet that shes chosen the wrong man Well, you have made a simple choice! You know not how to choose a man. Romeo! No not he. But still she wants to help Juliet. When she discovers Juliet in her slumber, and thinks she is dead, her desolation is genuine O woe! O woeful, woeful day never was seen so black a day as this Friar Laurence is a good man; he shows a love of nature, people, peace and harmony. When we first meet him he is talking to himself and displays a deep wisdom that shows his love of nature and his dismay at fellow mankinds faults the earth thats natures mothers is her womb in man as well as herbs-grave and rude will; and where the worser is predominant, full soon the canker eats up that plant. He displays his affection for Romeo shortly after we meet him what early tongue so sweet saluteth me? We also realise that he is very aware of what is transpiring in Romeos life, and he is very attuned to Romeos emotion , he sees straight away that something is wrong with Romeo Young son, it argues a distempered head, o soon to bid good morrow to they bed.. He is wondering why Romeo is up so early and realises that he must have something troubling his mind. We realise that the friar has been Romeos confident, when he expresses dismay at the thought that Romeo has spent the night with Rosaline God pardon sin! Wast thou with Rosaline?. Although perhaps he des not know Romeo as well as he thinks because he shows surprise when it is revealed that Romeos love has passed on to another, Holy saint Francis! What a change is here! Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear, so soon forsaken?. We know that the friar in his friendly, fatherly way has tried to advise Romeo before for doting, n ot for loving, pupil mine. We see his love of peace and harmony shine out with his reaction to the news that Romeo is in love with Juliet and wants to marry her, he tells Romeo In one respect Ill thy assistant be; for this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households rancour to pure love. He is banking on the marriage reuniting the warring families, and thus bringing peace to the city. He tries to council Romeo after he tells him about the exile, And turned that black word death to banishment. This is dear mercy and thou seest it not He tries to discuss the situation with Romeo, but Romeo will not listen to any sense as he has descended into a deep despondency. When Romeo threatens to stab himself The Friar stops him and lectures him, almost as though he was a father to him Thy tears are womanish, thy wild acts denote, the unreasonable fury of a beast. And goes on to tell Romeo to pull himself together, and go to his wife for a night, then hide in Mantua until they can make things right for his return. He wants to do the best he can by the young lovers. We know that his attachment to Romeo is strong enough to be common knowledge to those involved with Romeo, because when Balthazar addresses him he says It doth so, holy sir, and theres my master, one that you love. These are but a few of the types of love that Shakespeare wrote about in Romeo and Juliet. The main love the obvious one is of course true love. This is the love that we are lead to believe Romeo and Juliet felt for each other, but because their love, and the effects it caused, like the ripples in a pond, meant their time ran out before we are able to validate the longevity of it, I felt that I would prefer to explore some of the other more definite allegiances in the play. I feel that the patterns of love that Shakespeare shared with us would have perhaps touched his audiences more then than to day with our modern cynicism. They show that love can be destructive as well as creative and nurturing, and this is a lesson that we should all take to heart. As did the Capulets and Montagues, alas too late, but notice they took. O brother Montague, give me thy hand. This is my daughters jointure, for no more can I demand. This is when old Montague offers up the long awaited for peace between the families. But as Shakespeare points out, the fates can, and quite often do, take a hand in the passions of mankind.
